Apple at its online-only hardware event launched the Apple Watch 6 along with an affordable Apple Watch SE. Interestingly, Apple will still continue to sell the old Apple Watch Series 3. Coming to the Apple Watch Series 6, one of the major additions is blood oxygen monitor or SpO2 monitors. It will come with ECG, heart rate and other sensors that come along with the Apple Watch 5 and 4.

Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS) starts at $399 and Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) starts at $499 in the US. In India, the Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS) starts at Rs 40,990 and the Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) at Rs 49,900.

As far as the design is concerned, Apple Watch 6 looks similar to the Apple Watch 4 and 5. However, for the first time, Watch Series 6 will come with the Product Red edition. Along with the SpO2 monitor, there’s better sleep tracking as well. Importantly, Apple is working with its health partners to help Apple Watch 6 users track whether they are infected with COVID 19 or not. However, very little is known about the process of identifying a COVID 19 positive person using the Apple Watch 6.

Talking about the accuracy of the blood oxygen monitor, Apple said to compensate for natural variations in the skin and improve accuracy, the Blood Oxygen sensor employs four clusters of green, red, and infrared LEDs, along with the four photodiodes on the back crystal of Apple Watch, to measure light reflected back from blood. “Apple Watch then uses an advanced custom algorithm built into the Blood Oxygen app, which is designed to measure blood oxygen between 70 percent and 100 percent,” it added.

The Watch Series 6 is powered by the new S6 processor. Apple claims 20% faster performance. The Watch Series 6 will run watchOS 7 that was announced earlier. The new software focuses on more accurate heath measurements and workouts along with a new feature that reminds you to wash hands. There’s a new Family Setup feature as well. This will help parents to enable their kids to Apple Watch for their kids who do not have an iPhone. Basically, parents can manage their kids’ digital time along with location alerts, and do not disturb mode.
