About Dr. Craig Venter: Dr. Venter who was born in Salt Lake City Utah on October 14, 1946 did his college education at the College of San Mateo, CA, USA and later studied Biochemistry in University of California, San Diego under Nathan O. Kaplan, an eminent American Biochemist known for his creation of a type of nude mice model for laboratory studies of developing remedies to cancer. After obtaining a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology from UCSD, he became a Professor at the State University of New York and joined the National Institute of Health in 1984. He is the founder of Celera Genomics, The Institute of Genomic Research (TIGR), J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) and co-founder of Human Longevity Inc and Synthetic Genomics. Dr. Venter was listed in the “Time’s 100 list of the most influential people in the world” in 2007 and 2008 & in “The World’s 50 Most Influential Figures 2010” by the British magazine New Statesman.
The commemorative lecture of Dr. John Craig Venter is planned to be held in Japan on a later date.
Edogawa NICHE Prize was instituted in 2018 jointly by Jinseisha – A Social Welfare Trust which owns the Edogawa group of hospitals, Tokyo, Japan & Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM) a research institute established in 2005 based on an Indo-Japan collaboration with focus on cell therapies, stem cells using biomaterials and tissue engineering, which founded NCRM NICHE (www.ncrmniche.org) in 2006. The Edogawa NICHE Prize is to honour individuals who are physicians and/or scientists from around the world chosen by the Jinseisha-NCRM joint committee, based on their contribution to development of a novel solution that enables prevention or diagnosis or treatment of any disease, which is a result of an inter-disciplinary interaction among different fields of science. Prof. Masatoshi Koshiba, Nobel laureate in Physics (2002) and Dr. Masahiro Katoh, Chairman, Jinseisha trust serve as patrons, with Prof. Gary Levy, Prof. Jurgen Hescheler (Head, Neurophysiology, Univ. of Cologne) and Prof. Masaru Iwasaki (Vice-president, University of Yamanashi) in the awards committee.

NCRM NICHE, Fujio Cup Quiz & Edogawa NICHE Prize: It’s the 15 year- journey of the one of its kind Inter-disciplinary Interactive and innovative platform, the NCRM NICHE event, which has been inspiring leaders of tomorrow in life sciences through its Fujio Cup Quiz (FCQ) (www.fujiocupquiz.org), an unique Active Knowledge Gaining (AKG) event on Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine, that harbingered the institution of the Edogawa NICHE Prize, ably guided by Dr Shojiro Katoh, President, Edogawa Hospitals. Since 2006, FCQ & NCRM NICHE have witnessed participation by over 2500 scholars representing 15 countries from various disciplines. Participants to the XV edition of FCQ as a part of NCRM NICHE 2020 this year, have to actively learn, interact and involve in contest at various levels to win the Fujio Cup. An involved learning during this process is an intense inter-disciplinary interaction by itself, says Dr. John Sudhakar, an Ophthalmologist & Quiz master who periodically brain storms with his colleagues Dr Dedeepiya Devaprasad, an intensive care physician and Dr Saravana Ganesh, a cardiothoracic surgeon to frame thought provoking questions and themes for the quiz. The top scorers of the quiz or the FCQ Elites (http://www.fujiocupquiz.org/rollofhonor.htm) have a priority to nominate individuals for the Prize, and many have become scholars of prestigious institutes in the world such as the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, University of Toronto, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Hannover Medical School, Nanyang Technological University, Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies, Kyoto University, Okayama University & Tokyo University.
Contribution of NCRM NICHE to Science: Several breakthrough accomplishments such as Tissue engineering of aged-osteoarthritic cartilage derived chondrocytes expressing pluripotency biomarkers for regenerative therapies for knee joint problems (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.reth.2020.03.006) & Buccal epithelium Expanded and Encapsulated in Scaffold‐Hybrid Approach to Urethral Stricture (BEES‐HAUS) a relatively painless procedure to address problems in voiding urine (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/iju.13852) have been possible through the NCRM NICHE innovative platform. Recently, a black yeast derived biological response modifier glucan (BRMG) with immune enhancement and balancing to combat COVID-19 in people with comorbidities (https://doi.org/10.3389/fimmu.2020.01548) has become a part of this mission which is leading to exploring the biology of aging and microgravity in-depth.
NCRM NICHE 2020- event registration: Started as an inaugural anniversary commemorative event of NCRM, was held until 2019 in Tokyo, goes virtual & therefore global this year. Prof. Masaharu Seno from Okayama University, Japan working on Development of Cancer stem cells from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), Dr. Maria Cristina Nostro from University of Toronto working on functional β cells for treating Diabetes will be delivering lectures in the plenary session & Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier, Rector, Loyola Institutions, India & Gasson Professor, Boston College, USA will be speaking on COVID-19 & Stress Management; Psychological & Spiritual Perspectives in the Inter-Disciplinary Conclave (IDC) on 18th of October, 2020 (https://www.ncrmniche.org/ncrmniche2020/agenda.html).
