Eid al-Adha also known as Bakri Eid is observed as a festival of sacrifice for Muslims, which falls on the tenth day of Dhul Hijaah. Muslim communities all over the world pay their obedience to the Prophet on this day.

For the unversed, Eid al-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice is the last month of the muslim lunar calendar. It will be celebrated on 31 July 2020 this year. It is the end of Hajj Pilgrimage (Mecca, Saudi Arabia), which is the holiest place for Muslims. It is said that visiting Hajj cleanses one’s soul of sins and also instills a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. An essential part of the celebration is the sacrifice of goats. Owing to coronavirus, there will be several restrictions on the celebration of the day.

Apart from sacrificing goats, it is imperative for all Muslims to begin their day with extra prayers in the morning. In fact most mosques are packed with large groups of people but this year will be different due to government restrictions. The number of people who can attend will have to be limited and large gatherings will be banned to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus.

As for the sacrifice, people can do it with a goat or sheep – depending on what one can afford. News is rife that this year livestock was being sold online. The sacrificed meat is divided into three parts – the family who sacrificed it, extended families and those who are in need.
