In an all out attack on Harris, Trump said she was “very very nasty” to Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden during the debates, and she was the “meanest, most horrible, most disrespectful of anyone in the US Senate” to Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings.
“She lied. She said things that are untrue. She is a person who has told stories that are untrue… She wants to take away your healthcare plans and raise taxes,” Trump alleged, claiming that she was his “number one draft pick” and “the one I thought would be the best for us” to win the election.
Quick Edit: Can Kamala Devi Harris deliver?
In fact, once the excitement over the unprecedented pick subsided, pundits from both sides weighed in on whether Harris will hurt or help Trump’s chances for a re-election. Right wing commentators claimed she comes with a “lot of baggage” and gives President Trump “enough ammunition that he might actually manage to eke out another surprise victory.”
Indeed Trump cottoned on to her poor performance in the primaries, noting “she was one of the people that was projected to have a chance at winning. All she did as people got to know her, she went down. She finished at 2%, probably less than that and she fled. Remember how quickly.”
“She said horrible things about Biden… She essentially called him a racist. And other things that were very bad,” he added, admitting at one point that he was surprised by the choice because “she was probably nastier than even Pocahontas to Joe Biden” Pocohontos is a slur Trump often used to refer to Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who was also on Biden’s shortlist. and who welcomed Harris’ nomination.
“@KamalaHarris will be a great partner to @JoeBiden in making our government a powerful force for good in the fight for social, racial, and economic justice,” Warren tweeted, as the Democratic leadership closed ranks while some rank and filed factionalists duked it out.

But liberal commentators maintained Harris added heft to the ticket with her forceful personality, and in a vice-presidential debate match-up, she would “mop the floor with Mike Pence” and in fact be a direct threat to Trump himself given her prosecutorial background and her relative youthfulness. Harris, 55, will be the youngest of the quartet in the race in which Biden, 77, is oldest, followed by Trump, 74, and Pence, 61.
“Might as well switch the hashtag to #HarrisBiden2020 because we all know phony Kamala and her radical leftwing friends will be calling all of the shots in a “Biden Administration,” not slow Joe!” the President’s son Donald Trump Jr said.
Indeed, many Democrats expect her to take on a more prominent role than running mates typically do. “People familiar with research the campaign undertook to inform its decision (to pick Harris) told me voters viewed her as among the most qualified to be president on Day One — a key positive, given Biden’s status as potentially the oldest politician to ever serve as president,” the prominent Democratic operative David Axelrod wrote.
Pence himself welcomed Harris to the election campaign, claiming, “Joe Biden and the Democratic Party have been overtaken by the radical left, so given their promises of higher taxes, open borders, socialized medicine and abortion on demand. It’s no surprise that he chose Sen. Harris to be his running mate.”
Republicans began sharpening their attack ads, calling Harris a “phony” in one because voters had already rejected her in the primaries. Democrats on the other hand maintained that Harris would challenge Trump’s “law and order” campaign message he had focused on given that she made a name fighting crime.
