NEW DELHI: Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday evening after being hospitalized for the past 22 days following a critical brain surgery. His health had started deteriorating on Monday as he suffered a septic shock due to his lung infection and was in a deep coma on ventilator support.
The news of his demise was shared by his son, Abhijit Mukherjee, who thanked everyone for their prayers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets expressed his gratitude towards the former President. “From Day 1, I was blessed to have the guidance, support and blessings of Shri Pranab Mukherjee. I will always cherish my interactions with him,” said the PM.

President Ram Nath Kovind termed the demise of Mukherjee as “passing of an era”. “A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons,” wrote the President.

Condoling the death of former President, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that India has lost “an elder statesman” who “rose from humble beginnings to occupy the country’s highest constitutional position through hard work, discipline and dedication.

The official account of the Congress party offering condolences said that the former President was “one of the tallest leaders of the Congress Party” who “will always be remembered for his integrity & compassion”.

Following the announcement, Twitter was flooded with condolences for the bereaving family and people from all spheres of life took to social media to bid farewell.
