NEW DELHI: The trains to be operated by private players may have swanky features like that of Metro trains or Vande Bharat Express, including electronic sliding doors, passenger surveillance system, public address announcement system, display of information and destination boards.
The railway ministry has come out with the draft specification for the trains that would be operated on 506 routes in a phased manner from March 2023. These trains won’t start unless all doors are closed and electrically locked. A provision has also been made to have train data recorders (TDR) in each train with capacity to store the records such as speed, braking effort and battery voltage of at least 15 days.
The draft specifications issued on Wednesday said, “Train can be either of distributed power type or power head type which shall have driving cabs on both ends and shall be capable of running in either direction without the requirement for any change in its composition.” It also specifies that the design speed of these trains would be 180 kmph and should be capable of accelerating to 160 kmph from 0 kmph in 140 seconds.
A railway official said there are both options to go for trains with locomotives and Metro/ Vande Bharat type trains, which have distributed power systems. These trains may also have features like Braille signage, windows with double-glazed safety glass emergency talk-back mechanism like that of Vande Bharat trains. And the coaches will have zero discharge toilet systems.
At least 23 players including PSU majors like IRCTC and BHEL, and a host of private players such as GMR, CAF India, Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens and Medha are keen to operate trains, sources said. Tata, Adani, MakeMyTrip and Indigo who had earlier shown interest didn’t participate in the final pre-bid meeting on Wednesday.
Moreover, these trains would be fitted with an emergency brake with capability to bring them to complete halt in less than 1,250 metres when travelling at 160 kmph.
