On Wednesday, the national transporter said that it has invited request for qualifications for private participation for passenger train operations on 109 pairs of routes through 151 modern trains. It said that it plans to allow private entities to operate passenger trains and the project would entail private sector investment of about Rs 30,000 crore.
Here is a look at some of the political reactions from leaders of opposition parties —
Rahul Gandhi, Congress
Railways is the lone lifeline of poor and government wants to snatch even that. Snatch whatever you want to snatch. However, remember, the people of the country will give a befitting reply.
Randeep Surjewala, Congress
Now poor man’s rail is moving towards privatisation. Your words have always differed from your actions. If PM’s words lose importance then what can one say about the direction in which the country is moving.

So MoR quietly announced the privatisation of Railways yesterday with RFQ for 109 routes where private players can fix fares for 35 years! NO discussion, NO debate. Using Covid as an excuse to stifle dissent AND sell family silver!

Privatization of Railways is a decision which goes against the common people of the country. It is indeed the lifeline, as Rahul Gandhi ji said and this service should not be privatized.
Sitaram Yechury, CPM
The decision to privatise Railways is self subservience to private profits and not self-reliance. Using the Indian Railways network and running private passenger trains over it is to allow super-profits for the private players. Indian Railways is a social good on public service, undermining this would be detrimental to both the Railways and the country. This decision must be rescinded.
