CHENNAI: Playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, who was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai with Covid-19, remains on ventilator and ECMO support, said a medical bulletin issued by the hospital on Wednesday evening.
“His current clinical condition is stable. He is conscious and responsive,” said the bulletin issued by hospital assistant director (medical services) Dr Anuradha Baskaran.
“He is closely monitored by our multidisciplinary clinical team,” it said.
The 74-year-old singer was admitted to hospital on August 5 with mild symptoms. His condition deteriorated on August 13.
On Saturday, the hospital said: “Our multidisciplinary clinical team is actively collaborating with international experts from reputed centres in the US and the UK that have witnessed large volumes of Covid-19 patients requiring ECMO support.”
“The international experts concur with the clinical care that is being provided by our medical team to SP Balasubrahmanyam,” it said.
While the ventilator uses pressure to blow oxygenated air into the lungs, the ECMO pumps blood to a heart-lung machine, which removes carbon dioxide and returns oxygen-filled blood back to tissues.
